Imaginal Disk
“a time capsule of post-internet existentialism”
Imaginal Disk
“Imaginal Disk is Magdalena Bay discovering their sci-fi synthpop niche”
Imaginal Disk
“The duo of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin go longer, and further into left-field on their robust, hypnotic sophomore album.”
Mercurial World
“Even while the duo's finding a distinct sound, Mercurial World serves bop after bop.”
Mercurial World
“Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin’s fuzzy, rococo synthpop confections have a magic power: They sound like whatever you grew up with, whenever that was.”
Imaginal Disk
“The Los Angeles duo’s second album is musically and conceptually dense, warping the fundamentally optimistic sound of pop to suit a more cynical and paranoid reality.”
Imaginal Disk
“Imaginal Disk is one of the most inventive and immersive pop albums of the decade. With this record, Magdalena Bay blends glossy synths and experimental production into something that feels both futuristic and deeply introspective. The greatest strength of this album is its atmosphere; The production is bright, layered, and incredibly detailed, filled with shimmering synths, glitchy textures, and melodic hooks. At times it feels euphoric and playful, but has underlying sense of that introspection I previously spoke about. Lyrically, Imaginal Disk explores the boundaries between reality and imagination. The record plays with the idea of self-creation and how people shape their own identities. What makes the album special is how it blends experimentation with accessibility. The songs are very catchy, yet the production constantly pushes into unexpected territory. Only a few artists can create something experimental, but still have the common audience enjoy it. I give this a high 9 out of 10.”
Mercurial World
“The best Pop albums for me are ones that manage to dash between different styles and sounds. Something that this album does constantly”
mini mix vol. 1
“Not my favourite Magdalena Bay project but definitely a strong one”
Imaginal Disk
“Amazing vibe, very fun. Love the melody motif throughout.”
