HADES
“Can’t give it a 10 as it is only day 1 BUT! this album is perfection…. This feels like the true return to form for Melanie since K-12 . Nailing every concept and speaking about issues that plague our modern society through a dystopian lense. The best songs on this album deal with metaphors for our history that actually still trouble us today (the plague, and the Vatican especially). This is an album I am confident will forever be remembered in her discography and is definitely contender for my fave albums of the year already. The production led by Cj Baran (pity party, cake and the portals album) is perfectly capturing the atmosphere an this has me extremely excited for part 2 of this saga coming out later this year. For Melanie’s longest album yet its duration is a blessing and I confidently will have this on repeat all year long. Top 3: Avoidant, The Vatican, Is this a Cult?”
K-12
“K-12 was the perfect follow up to the insanely successful crybaby. After recording 13 stellar music videos for that record Melanie went heads in deep with another concept record made entirely with a film that dropped the same night (and became free on top of it). K-12 while being my preferred album to crybaby has 1 song that even in the film that didn’t feel as seamless to the record which to me is Recess . While having great vocals the song itself doesn’t feel like a true closer like High School Sweethearts is. The first 12 tracks however make my favorite work that Melanie has done to date (before hades comes out tomorrow). The school narrative similar to crybaby being ever present as ever allows the listener once agent to be sucked in to her perfect world. K-12 graduated from the school of pop perfection. Top 3: High School Sweethearts, Lunchbox Friends, Show & Tell”
Cry Baby (Deluxe Edition)
“With her newest album releasing tomorrow we look behind on Melanie Martinez’s debut album. A mixture of creepy and cute Crybaby defines an era in Melanie’s art where she found her footing perfectly on her first attempt. Even looking at the titles alone you can tell exactly what she wanted people to expect and how to flip it on its head. One of my favorites sippy cup, is a dark fantasy that flips the sippy cup imagery into an alcoholic murder scene leaving the listener into a new world. All the best people are crazy but this album is too; there’s a reason why it’s well regarded as one of the best concept and debut albums of all time. And it’s not missing its hit songs either; play date, pity party, and soap ran the charts over the past few years. With play date resurrected in 2021. Top 3: Milk and Cookies, Play Date, Sippy Cup Honorable Mention: Pacify Her”
PORTALS
“While an album I still enjoy in full I do find it hard considering everything crybaby and k-12 had involved in story and lore. Crybaby’s goodbye feels a bit short lived sometimes especially without the conclusion of visuals we will never come to see. The songs themselves are still v well thematicized and while some miss in some aspects the album on its own is still a very solid project from the queen of concept. Portals no longer being Melanie’s most recent project as of tomorrow really solidifies that while not my favorite project of hers to date it still is a solid piece of work and deserves to be recognized as such. Top 3: Evil, Death, Milk of the Siren Honorable Mention: Tunnel Vision”
PORTALS
“TOP5 1ST LISTEN) nymphology, pluto, battle of the larynx, the contortionist, evil HMS) death, void, womb”
K-12
“IMAGINE WHAT THE TOWNS PEOPLE THOUGHT ABOUT SEEING A FLOATING BUS”
