Since his early work with Ellen Allien in 2006, it seems that Apparat has defined his craft through collaboration. After releasing three albums with Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary of German electronic band Modeselektor as Moderat, Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) spoke of being inspired by the trio's live performances and their ability to create a holistic sound together.
LP5 finds the German musician layering lush electronics and live instrumentation (featuring cello from Philipp Thimm and percussion from Battles' John Stanier), giving songs like the dreamlike "Dawan" and the panoramic "Brandenburg" an opal feel.
But it's the breathtaking intricacy and patience of tracks like "Voi_Do," "Caronte" and "EQ_Break" that put Apparat close to Talk Talk and Radiohead territory, as far as pushing your craft into something new and undiscovered — with Ring's sometimes-maudlin vocals being the album's only drawback. Although Apparat has expanded his sound with help from his friends, LP5 stands as a singular achievement.
