Bristol producer follows his bass-heavy "Phoenix" single with a more sprawled-out album that takes its cues from film scores and 80s synth music.
Back in 2009, it seemed that Bristol, England was the next breeding ground of UK bass music, with young hotshots Joker and Gemmy developing the futuristic, highly melodic "purple" sound. Outside of Guido's great LP from 2010, the Bristol scene's been weirdly quiet since that initial boom. Quiet except for young producer Hyetal (real name David Corney), who made heads turn last summer with his killer "Phoenix" 12". Pushing an atmospheric, quickly fluctuating style, the song seemed to nudge "purple" into a spacier, more ethereal realm.
