Being Funny In A Foreign Language
The 1975 (2022)
“The 1975 may have fun on the surface but the album features a lingering sadness. Songs like ‘Happiness’ and ‘Part Of The Band’ have an ironic sensibility to them and it proves how clever these boys are at creating a space”

Being Funny in a Foreign Language is a sonic masterpiece that solidifies The 1975 as one of the most innovative and exciting bands of our generation. This album is a perfect blend of the band’s signature sound—eclectic, experimental, and emotionally charged—with a fresh new energy that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking. From the opening notes of “I’m In Love With You” to the dreamy, almost ethereal “Oh Caroline,” it’s clear that this album is a new chapter in the band’s evolution. Matty Healy’s lyrics are razor-sharp as always—witty, vulnerable, and reflective—and they fit seamlessly with the lush, atmospheric production. “Oh Caroline” is a stand-out track that brings out an unexpected vulnerability, while “I’m In Love With You” feels like a punch to the heart in the best possible way. The entire album flows effortlessly, blending different styles from indie-pop to jazz-infused moments, but what really sets it apart is the way it feels like a journey. The band takes us through intimate and universal emotions—love, confusion, and the beauty of being alive—making each track feel both personal and universally relatable. Being Funny in a Foreign Language is a gorgeous, ambitious album, and The 1975 prove once again that they are masters of making music that makes you feel everything. It’s an album that gets better with each listen, and it’s one of their finest works to date
