POMPEII // UTILITY
Earl Sweatshirt & SURF GANG (2026)
“Good but not amazing”
“Earl and Mike had so much potential for this album to be in the Grammys. But they sold by having almost the same beat and flow on every track.”

Two of this century’s coldest, most martyrial rap auteurs flex new muscles over a decent batch of ambient plugg beats.

Historically, Earl and MIKE’s songs have been studies in contrast with oft-beautiful results. But their collaborative album doesn’t work that way. With flows set over glacial beats, almost every song is in the same color.

This is really bad. Seems like people either hate it or love it, and I personally hate it. MIKE’s part has the exact same flow through every track, and also has one of the worst features I’ve ever heard in Niontay on F.E.A.R. Nothing changes on Earl’s part either. They do not work with Surf Gang beats at all. The whole project almost seemed like one big song with nothing changing at all. I respect the art and everything but man this was not for me
