As was the case with its 2019 predecessor Who Are You Now, the record’s folky nuances provide the bedrock for the bulk of its sonic consistency. The album’s core sound, therefore, feels like a natural progression from the sound of previous efforts. While it may sound a little too musically similar to its predecessor, the sonic complexities do mark a noticeable step forward.
Where the LP makes strides forward is in its songwriting and composition. Cunningham seems more confident in her sound than ever, tapping into her musical and lyrical prowess with an indelible conviction. The track’s opener, “All I’ve Ever Known”, for example, sees the Los Angeles-based singer playing every instrument; a testament to both her ability and assertiveness.
The record’s lyrics demonstrate its confident nature further; tackling the hard-to-address issues head-on. Feelings of personal loss, frustration and determination are examined throughout, adding credence to the album’s title. “Your Hate Could Power A Train” throws shade at a controlling ex-partner, while “Life According to Raechel” laments the loss of Cunningham’s Grandmother.
The latter is the record’s most poignant moment. Its intricate slow nature and exquisite string section, coupled with matter-of-fact lyricism on regret and loss, give the record one of its true gems. Cunningham here frames her ability to easily create such emotive semantic fields, highlighting her songwriting dexterity.
Another of the record’s stand-out tracks, “Hospital” sees Cunningham leaning into her more rocky influences. Gritty guitar lines give the tune a smooth, rolling jive, while Cunningham’s deep and soulful vocals form the vehicle for lyrics that describe the singer’s distaste for the overwhelming information-action ratio, and her intention to ditch it.
Revealer will likely pave the way for Cunningham to further build on her international profile. A successful three years have already seen her pick up accolades including Grammy nominations and support slots for Harry Styles, and this record sees her musicianship at its highest, most confident peak.
