If you’re seeking your niche in Montréal, the Latin Quarter is a solid place to do it. The smattering of blocks near University of Québec at Montréal has historically catered to a bohemian-leaning collegiate set, as keen on its clusters of cafés and bars as its proximity to one of North America’s oldest gayborhoods, the Village. The main movie theater in the area screens blockbusters and indie French cinema side by side; the local library is Quebec’s largest, containing some 3.5 million works. It’s the ideal environment for honing your taste, then changing it; finding your thing, then finding something else.
It’s fitting that the shapeshifting Montréal producer Lambert Pitre, aka DJ Cinéma Quartier Latin, takes his name from the area. Since debuting with a few one-off singles in 2020, he’s established himself among a new wave of Canadian dance producers, including Loukeman and Jump Source, loosely linked by their inclination to lace ghostly samples through electronic music’s core circadian rhythms: breaks, four-on-the-floor, 2-step. As DJ Cinéma Quartier Latin, Pitre has proven himself a jack-of-all-tempos, as adept at jump-around house as ambient garage. On his debut album, Bruise, Pitre synthesizes these instincts within a moodier, more cohesive palette than ever, reveling in the shades of gray between house and techno, words and noises, body music and brain music.
Gray areas aren’t just a conceptual chassis on Bruise. The album comes accompanied by a nine-minute short film replete with the color, a supercut of dreary rural days and stormy evenings set to a three-song suite. It doesn’t need dialogue to communicate that ambiguity is of interest, and tone takes precedence over thesis. The video’s moodiness subtly underscores the fact that the lion’s share of these tracks are built on one muffled breakbeat, which tolls like clockwork across the LP. But within this repetitive cycle, Pitre still manages to introduce tension and surprise. Opener “Blame” builds a Noreaster out of a sample from H.E.R.’s “Changes,” swirling her vocal with thunderclaps, vinyl crackle, and sprinkling synths over a break that sounds hewn from two shifting tectonic plates. Later, on “June,” the sequence lends to a future-bass-meets-RL Grime breakdown that might’ve gone viral on Trap Nation back in the day, a 180 from the thick layer of atmosphere that introduces the album. Although Pitre’s output thus far would’ve suggested a neat path towards higher-energy breaks mutations, like jump-up or breakcore, he’s more interested in using the pattern as a metronome, helping thread the needle between dancefloor techno (“Do You Remember,”), sub-heavy 140 (“No Escape Plan”) and wistful IDM (“Kegaska.”)
If all of this rings any Tunes 2011-2019 alarm bells… ding ding ding! Burial is far and away the blueprint here, evident in the vespertine pads, tape hiss, and hauntological vocal flips, deployed as if overheard from a distant astral plane. But Pitre’s interpretation of the towering British producer’s aesthetic never feels like blind worship. More often than not, he uses these nostalgic textures as inroads to totally different ends: the aforementioned “June,” or the airy grunge that closes out “This Pain” and “Road.” Pitre may wear his influences like iron-on patches on his chest, but you never doubt who put together the look.
At points, the smooth sequencing here results in glassy eyes. By the time the fifth or sixth sullen break cuts through a thick stack of arps, I found myself yearning for some more variation. I wish “Do You Remember,” which builds out a beat that recalls countryman Drake’s “Road Trips” with a children’s choir and arpeggiated whistle tone, opened up into a banger instead of fading into a piano fizzle. I wish the ambient outlier “Tonight I Won’t Be Afraid” evolved into more than just an interlude. But the most inventive moments—the dungeon-bass euphoria of “June,” the electro-funk of “Trust,” a collaboration with local singer DrEy ArMaNi—reveal an artist whose curiosity, about both his medium and his predilections, will take him far. All in all, Bruise is Pitre doing his namesake justice, and making a name for himself in the process.
