They have felt sharp growing pains over the years, the agony of change (two band members leaving in 2022 and roping in two university friends with a moment’s notice) and the ever-growing challenge of finding their feet since their 2020 breakthrough EP Breakfast. But with their debut album Teething, they dance with a particular magic.
Lead vocalist Scout Moore’s (Eggy) voice on tender moments such as “My Only Love” is striking, counteracting whimsically with the plunging chorus. Meanwhile, “Stranger”, a story about Eggy’s own experiences as a non-binary individual, floats with an elegant lightness, bearing the front of the vulnerability on the album. But that’s the subtle beauty of it - gentle lyrics saved by euphoric production.
The jolty yet bending lead single “Unpredictable” is an instant highlight, acting as an appropriate label for the album and the band themselves - unpredictable and ever-evolving. Meanwhile, album opener “Marmite”, with its rallying cry of bitter words “You don’t stand a fucking chance / So let’s dance”, introduces the album perfectly.
Porij’s confident and assured debut delves into their love for not settling for one genre. Taking you on an adventure through emotions and soundscapes, it’s a fluid record that never stands still.
