After years of weird-ass bedroom recordings, Ariel Pink has upgraded his operation, and what he loses in stoner burble, he gains in high-def Sixties flashback triggers. The music gives the whimsy weight. "Only in My Dreams" channels the Byrds via the La's, and the synth reverie "Farewell American Primitive" might be a kiss-off to his old self, with a glance over his shoulder but no regrets.

Mature Themes is Ariel Pink's grittier, gristlier, and funnier follow-up, an album that clarifies that Before Today was not a sign of things to come but rather just a signpost along his strange journey.

Though Mature Themes does contain some of my favorite Ariel Pink songs, it's hardly a solid listen. Between "Nostradamus & Me" and "Driftwood," there are just too many underwhelming and forgettable potholes on this LP.
