King Louie's Tony is a force of nature and one of the strongest projects of his career. This is no small feat in a 13-tape discography stretching back eight years (2007's Boss Shit, recorded when he was just a teenager, was his debut). Tony's overriding purpose is to reassert Louie's centrality within the drill scene, a movement for which he was mainly responsible, and what this means is doubling down on all the signifiers that drove critics and casual fans towards, then away from, Chicago street rap over the past three years. Unapologetic, Louie marshals the bleak language and imagery of violence to craft a world where brutal realism and mythos collide, where reality bleeds indiscriminately into art, and the extreme is everyday.
Thematically and conceptually, this isn't new terrain for street rap. What is novel is the sound Louie's cultivated throughout, which is darker, more coherent, more purposeful than before. Tony crackles with an empowering, unpredictable energy, his performance concomitant with the tape's horror film canvas. The beats are gritty and seething, hi-hats running a jagged course through storm cloud production, disembodied voices swirling in a haunted chorale. His cast of producers—including DJ L, Jay Storm, C-Sick, Hearon Trackz, and Smylez—use texture as a weapon, abrasively breaking through the predictable motions. This noise-driven approach conjures a specific kind of "realism": it's all tactile surfaces and spatial dynamics, the experience of heightened senses, the situational awareness of an adrenaline rush.
The increased urgency of Tony dials back and disguises certain other qualities that were common to Louie's more recent work. He's always been a funny writer who never oversold a punchline; here, humor keeps the album from sounding dour, but its presence is never telegraphed, as even his amusing punch-ins ("I should have a holiday (No school!)") are secondary to the portentous mood. His rap style is typically nonchalant, with lyrics delivered in a slurred cadence that sell meaning as an afterthought. He adapts with surprising ease to a more apocalyptic setting: forcefulness renders his mumble into a smear on "Difference". On opener "B.O.N.", his words batter the listener with percussive start-stop flows that build into repeating patterns ("Talking broke is foreign, my teeth cost a foreign/ Yo' bitch on the horn, tryna shoot a porn"). But nuance and emotion are in his writing, not his delivery. His rap style remains one of detached cool, more Biggie than Pac: a performance of control, not catharsis.
Tony itself, however, sounds very much like catharsis, and more like a product of Makaveli-era 2Pac more than any other album in recent memory. That quality is found beyond the song title allusions of "Live & Die in Chicago" and "Ambitions as a Rider"; the record's raw, sparking, exposed-wire sound boils over with intensity. It's also found in Louie's religious fatalism, and in the language that renders Louie in mythic terms throughout. On records like "G.O.D." and "God & King", he's a transcendent figure even amidst the dirt: "I'm a God/ Gold wings cause I'm heaven-sent."
Tony's second half opens up musically, letting a bit of light shine in before the disembodied voices return. It begins with "Michael Jackson Money", a lone soft-focus melodic gem with pithily clever bars ("My sister Janet/ I want Michael Jackson money/ Might buy a planet"). The guitar-driven "Ambitions" is the most narratively gripping, with a level of autobiographical depth that scrapes the heart: "I ain't gave a fuck since I was my daughter's size/ I gain ambition when I look in my daughter's eyes/ Who ever knew I would succeed after all them tries?/ This last year I lost respect for a lotta guys."
Louie's world may be narrower than Pac's, as his sympathies are focused on his city, the revolutionary spirit confined to the perspective of a street corner militant. Injustice is local: snitching, deception, betrayal, and abandonment of one's hometown. These may seem like straightforward values but the consequences echo: what does one sacrifice to commit oneself, as Louie does on "Live & Die in Chicago," the album's climax? "My city influenced my country, can't get away from Chicago/ They ask me, Louie, you gon' leave? No, I'm gon' stay in Chicago/ I'm the heart of Chicago." Two bars later, he calls himself the city's 2Pac.
In 2014, Chicago's street rap scene is fractured, and Tony feels like a response to the disparate paths its biggest stars have taken. "The industry don't give me credit 4 none of shit I started," Louie tweeted earlier this year. While Bobby Shmurda adapts drill's sound to a new setting and a deal with Epic Records, Louie remains on hold with the same label. Tony, a return to his roots, is a reassertion of ownership. Although he's sacrificed the sonic diversity and irreverence that made records like "Val Venis" so sui generis, his frustrations in the industry have focused his talents to a serrated edge.
