WEEDKILLER

WEEDKILLER

Ashnikko (2023)

7.3/ 10

You can almost feel that uncomfortable urge to belong to the alt wave—like Caroline Polachek, PinkPantheress, Eartheater, or FKA twigs—all over Weedkiller. The whole Mad Max-meets-fairies concept feels like a kiss that leaves you wondering what flavors are still lingering… but once you really sit with it, there are fragments of ideas that try to do too much and end up holding onto nothing. In some moments, you actually get pulled into this world—like on Worms or the title track Weedkiller—but then you drop into a kind of mediocre reboot on tracks like Don’t Look at It or Cherry Python. The collabs with artists like Danielle Lalita and Ethel Cain are actually pretty solid—but they only highlight how urgent Ashnikko’s need to belong to that crowd feels. You can almost hear her screaming, “hey, I’m here girls, I’m just as different as you.” Some of the lyrics aim for poetic, but land more like jokes from an episode of Family Guy. It’s kinda a shame this isn’t a solid step forward for Ashnikko in finding a sound that truly feels like her.
