Olivia Rodrigo (2021)
“Sour by Olivia Rodrigo still feels like a punch to the gut in the best way. As a music fan, what grabbed me immediately was how raw it is…the heartbreak isn’t polished or poetic in a distant way; it’s messy, dramatic, and very real. The pop-punk explosions hit hard, the ballads ache, and the songwriting has that diary-entry quality that makes you feel like you shouldn’t be listening… but you can’t look away. Tracks swing between rage and vulnerability so naturally that it mirrors how heartbreak actually feels. It’s not perfect! But a few songs blend into the same emotional tone but as a debut, it’s bold and culturally loud. Sour captured a specific kind of young heartbreak and made it universal, and that’s something you can’t fake.”

i was pleasantly surprised i enjoyed this, not as much as everyone else seems too, but i did enjoy it. my favorite track is definitely favorite crime by a long shot, but a good showcase to the world of what she has to offer.
